The Kusaug people’s Congress KPC has presented a petition to government requesting for a probe into the military attacks in Garu on the 29th October 2023. They are also demanding compensation for victims who suffered the brutality in the Garu District and Bugri in the Tempani District. According to KPC, one person has passed on after many days of pains. These came to light during a street protest in Garu in the Upper East Region. The demonstrators were drawn from Bawku Municipal, Garu, Binduri, Pusiga, Bawku West and Tempani Districts. Clad in red and black, demonstrators say they were fed up with the military brutality and want government to compensate the injured.
“We are calling for an independent investigation into the incidents of military brutalities and indiscriminate attacks on the people of the Kusaug Traditional Area. We are asking government to constitute an Independent committee of inquiry to investigate the abuses involving the military in the aforementioned areas.”
According to Prof. Azumah, the people’s trust in the security forces have dwindled and wished there could be a change of security personnel in the area.
“The people of the Kusaug Traditional Area have lost trust in the leadership of both the Military and Police forces in Bawku. The masses are losing confidence in the Security forces. We are also asking for an immediate replacement of leadership of the security forces in Bawku to prevent further erosion of confidence and trust from the masses.” President of KPC Professor John Azumah requested.
In an interview with GBC News, the Member of Parliament for Garu, Albert Akuka Alalzuga said the Minister of National Security would be in parliament to brief the house on the issue.
