UE/R – ONLY BAWKU WEST OUT OF 15 ASSEMBLIES ELECTS PM

By – Sadat Dabo

Out of the 15 Municipal and Districts Assemblies (MDAs) in the Upper East Region, only the Bawku West District was able to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after the inauguration of the newly elected Assembly Members.

The elected PM, Hon. Awini Zakaria Assana polled 39 votes in a second round of voting to beat his contender, Hon. Azaaba A. Williams who polled 10 votes.

According to reports across the region, the remaining 14 MDAs failed to elect their PMs.

Delivering the national address on behalf of His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at both the Builsa South and North Assemblies, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, said the Constitution was clear on the process through which Ghanaians should decentralize governance to the local level.

He said in spite of the clarity, some citizens still expected developments from the national level, which were within the remit of the District Assembly.

He charged the Assembly Members to change the status quo and deepen the local governance and decentralization process for citizens to easily access basic public services in their Districts.

“This, therefore, calls for your continuous capacity building as well as sensitization of all citizens on the tenets of decentralization and Ghana’s local governance system,” he said.

He said the Assembly Members were inaugurated at a time when efforts were made by government through the Ministry Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development to improve on the mobilization of Internally Generated Fund (IGF).

“To this end, l wish to entreat you to work closely with each other to create innovative ways of mobilizing the needed resources for the development within your areas,” he said.
