U.N. Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Ms Kelly Clement was has touched base with families of refugees at the Tarikom Refugee camp in the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region who were displaced due to the conflicts in neighboring Burkina Faso and Togo. It is part of the U.Ns mission to give a supporting hand to countries hit by this refugee’s influx and improving their living conditions.
Ms Kelly Clement said, “the visit would afford me the opportunity to learn about the urgent needs of the refugees and how we can collaborate with the state to support them.”
Ms Kelly noted that a lot of support is needed to improve the condition of the people displaced as a result of disturbances in their countries.
The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga commended the UNHCR for their support since the arrival of these refugees. He said the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council and Regional Security Council have been on the grounds to ensure the safety of the refugees.
“The region has over three thousand of these refugees in the camps and you know that means a lot of resources for their survival. If the immigration should tell you their challenges concerning how their work in getting these influx registered, you will be sad.”
“So the RCC is doing its best to make sure they are safe and healthy.” Mr. Asanga indicated.
The UNHCR and the Ghana Refugee Board are jointly conducting border and protection monitoring with the support of a variety of government actors including the Ghana Immigration Service, NADMO and the regional and district officers to ensure all are registered at the reception centres.
