The Ghana Education Service (GES) has organised a one day capacity building workshop for members of the Security Workers Association within the education sector in the Upper East Region, aimed at strengthening safety measures across schools.

The training, held on April 30, 2026, brought together security personnel from various educational institutions to equip them with enhanced skills, modern security tactics, and practical strategies to improve safety on campuses. Participants were also introduced to new ideas and methods to better manage emerging security challenges within the school environment.

The workshop focused on key issues affecting school security, including student kidnapping, unauthorized exit of students from campus, theft of school property, and other related concerns. Facilitators emphasised the need for vigilance, teamwork, and proactive approaches among security personnel to help curb such incidents and ensure a safe learning environment.

The Security Workers Association, which operates under the umbrella of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), also used the platform to highlight pressing welfare concerns affecting its members.

In an interview, Mr. Matthew Abeaba Abereniya, Principal Industrial Relations Officer of TEWU at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in the Upper East Region, disclosed that many security personnel are deeply worried about the non payment of their allowances, which have been in arrears for some time.

According to him, the situation has caused significant dissatisfaction among members of the association. He warned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, it could lead to serious consequences, including the possibility of security workers abandoning their posts.

Mr. Abereniya therefore called on the appropriate authorities to take swift action to resolve the matter, stressing that the welfare of security personnel is critical to maintaining effective security within educational institutions.

The workshop ended with a renewed commitment from participants to apply the knowledge gained to improve security standards in schools across the region, while also urging stakeholders to prioritise their welfare to ensure sustained dedication to duty.
