The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of TUC Ghana is set to organise a breast cancer awareness workshop and screening exercise for its members in the Upper East Region on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as part of efforts to promote early detection and save lives

The programme will take place at the Catholic Social Centre in Bolgatanga, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with the union extending an invitation to its members and the general public to participate.

The initiative forms part of TEWU’s national rotational breast cancer awareness programme held during Pink October, the annual breast cancer awareness month. This year’s theme is “Every Story Is Unique, Every Journey Matters.”

Ahead of the event, national executives of TEWU of TUC Ghana appeared on GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga on Monday, October 19, to educate the public about the importance of cancer awareness, encourage screening and mobilise participation in Wednesday’s programme.

Free breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening at GH¢50

According to the union, the programme will feature an opening ceremony, health education and screening exercises.

The Ghana Health Service is supporting the breast cancer screening, which will be provided free of charge. Participants will, however, pay a token of GH¢50 per person for cervical cancer screening.

The Upper East Regional Council of TEWU has added cervical cancer screening to the programme to broaden access to preventive healthcare and provide women with an opportunity to receive education on both conditions on the same day

The union says it will bear the organisational costs of the exercise, including arrangements for participants.

Key speakers expected at the opening ceremony include Sister Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, National Chairperson, TEWU of TUC (Ghana), Sister Obuobi Oparebea Olivia 2nd National Vice Chairperson, Brother King James Azotiba General Secretary, TEWU of TUC (Ghana), Sister Adamu Bintu Fati
1st National Trustee TEWU of TUC (Ghana) Sister Theodora Amanor Dede – Gender & Youth Coordinator, TEWU of TUC (Ghana) of the union

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive is expected to attend as guest of honour, alongside the Regional Director of Education.

‘Early detection can save lives’

During the radio discussion, TEWU representatives stressed that regular screening and early detection remain critical in the fight against breast cancer

TEWU promises confidentiality for participants

Addressing concerns that may discourage people from attending screening exercises, the union assured participants that their medical information would be treated with strict confidentiality

The representatives explained that screening results and any diagnosis would be communicated directly to the individuals concerned and the relevant health professionals

They stressed that the union would not publicly disclose the medical conditions of members who participate in the exercise

According to the union, its role will include providing organisational support and, where applicable, financial assistance to members who require further treatment

The assurance is intended to encourage more women to participate without fear of stigma, embarrassment or public exposure
