The National Chairperson of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of TUC Ghana, Sister Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, has urged women to prioritise regular breast cancer screening and reject myths surrounding the disease, warning that it continues to claim lives
She made the call during an interview on GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga on Monday, October 19, 2026, ahead of a breast cancer awareness workshop and screening exercise scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, in the Upper East Region
The programme, which forms part of the union’s national breast cancer awareness campaign, will take place at the Catholic Social Centre in Bolgatanga, beginning at 9:00 a.m
It is aimed at educating TEWU members and the public on breast cancer, promoting early detection and encouraging women to take advantage of screening services
Speaking on the programme, Sister Braimah stressed the importance of understanding individual risk factors, learning about the disease and encouraging other women to participate in screening
“My call to action is that we want to encourage our people to know their risks. As I said, every story differs and it is unique. And so you should know your risks,” she said
She urged women to make screening a regular priority and to help spread awareness among their peers
“Make sure you screen yourself continually. Make sure you learn about what breast cancer is all about. And then pull another woman along,” she added
The TEWU National Chairperson also called for an end to misconceptions about breast cancer, emphasising that awareness and early action could help save lives
“The myth around it is that we are past that stage. It is real and it is killing. So let us come together and kick breast cancer away,” she stated
TEWU commits funds to breast cancer awareness
Sister Braimah disclosed that the union had committed resources to breast cancer awareness activities at both the national and regional levels, underscoring its determination to prevent avoidable deaths among women
“Our union is committing funds for us to create awareness at the national level and at the regional level. We don’t want to lose any woman through breast cancer. So together, let’s kick breast cancer away,” she said
On funding for the campaign, she explained that TEWU operates under a structured budget that provides for its activities, including the annual breast cancer awareness programme
She said the initiative remained a priority for the union, making it possible to allocate funds towards sustaining the campaign
Education directors urged to release women for screening
As part of efforts to ensure maximum participation, the National Chairperson appealed to directors of education to release TEWU members, particularly women working in school kitchens and other educational institutions, to attend Wednesday’s programme
She encouraged members to turn out in large numbers and take advantage of the screening opportunity
Sister Braimah stressed that identifying potential health concerns early would allow affected persons to seek medical attention promptly before their conditions worsened
The union is therefore calling on its members and the general public in the Upper East Region to participate in the programme and support the wider campaign against breast cancer
National executives lead awareness campaign
The National Chairperson was accompanied during the radio interview by other national executives and representatives of TEWU of TUC Ghana
They included Sister Obuobi Oparebea Olivia, Second National Vice Chairperson; Brother King James Azotiba, General Secretary; Sister Adamu Bintu Fati, First National Trustee; Sister Theodora Amanor Dede, Gender and Youth Coordinator; and Brother Abeaba Matthew Abereniya, Upper East Regional Industrial Relations Officer
The executives used the engagement to encourage greater public
The executives used the engagement to encourage greater public awareness, regular screening and collective action to address the impact of breast cancer
The upcoming Bolgatanga programme is expected to provide members with an opportunity to learn more about the disease and access screening services
TEWU is urging women across the Upper East Region to make their health a priority, attend the workshop and encourage others to do the same
