PRESS RELEASE: TUSAAG Announces Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Delayed Allowances.

The Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has officially announced the resumption of its indefinite nationwide strike action, effective Monday, July 20, 2026, citing government’s failure to honour key financial commitments made to the association.
In a press release addressed to the Minister for Education and signed by the National President, Stanley Akamiri Abopaam, and the General Secretary, Jeremiah Awini, the association expressed disappointment over what it described as the government’s continued delay in implementing agreed allowances despite several assurances.

According to TUSAAG, the decision to resume the strike was reached during a Council meeting held on July 9, 2026, following months of unsuccessful engagements with government officials.
The association recalled that its earlier strike, which was suspended on December 22, 2025, was called off after the Minister for Education assured the leadership that a one time research allowance would be paid by March 30, 2026. When the deadline was missed, TUSAAG said another assurance was given during a meeting on March 31, 2026, requesting additional time until the end of April to facilitate payment.
“In good faith and in the interest of our universities, we stayed the resumption of the strike,” the statement noted, adding that nearly three months later, the association is yet to receive a clear timeline for the payment of the allowance.

Beyond the delayed research allowance, TUSAAG pointed to an agreement reached on April 22, 2026, between the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), TUSAAG and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). The agreement provided for an interim allowance arrangement, including the consolidation of Non Basic Allowance and Market Premium, a 40 percent increase in the combined amount, and an implementation date of April 1, 2026.
However, the association said a subsequent communication from the Ministry of Finance altered the agreed implementation date to July 1, 2026, without any explanation, further deepening frustrations among members.
TUSAAG described the situation as a clear indication of the lack of urgency by relevant stakeholders in addressing the welfare concerns of senior administrators within Ghana’s technical universities.
The association has therefore served notice that it will indefinitely resume its strike action from July 20, 2026, until government fully addresses the outstanding issues and fulfils its commitments.
The strike is expected to affect administrative operations across technical universities nationwide, potentially disrupting essential services and the smooth functioning of the institutions.
TUSAAG has copied its notice to the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Minister for Finance, Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Executive Secretary of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Chairman of the Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities Ghana (VCTUG).
The association is urging government to take immediate action to resolve the impasse and avert further disruption to the country’s technical university system.
