By – Sadat Dabo
The Chief Justice has ordered the transfer of a contempt application filed by the Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, from the High Court in Nalerigu to the High Court in Tamale
The case centres on the alleged defiance of judicial processes in the disputed Bunkpurugu chieftaincy, following the enskinment of Melchizedek Musah Jamung as chief on September 14, 2026
The Nayiri, who exercises traditional authority over the Mamprugu Traditional Area, filed the application on October 14, 2026, seeking to have four individuals committed and punished for contempt of court
The respondents are Melchizedek Musah Jamung, Nyani Yoagbat, Kpari Yennue and Elisha Naan
According to the application, the four allegedly proceeded with the enskinment of Mr Jamung despite an ongoing legal dispute over the Bunkpurugu skin
The Nayiri is asking the court to commit the respondents for contempt under Order 50 of the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2004 (C.I. 47)
The allegations are yet to be determined by the court, and the transfer of the case does not amount to a finding of contempt against any of the respondents
Background to the Bunkpurugu Chieftaincy Dispute
The latest legal action follows a February 24, 2026, judgment by the Judicial Committee of the National House of Chiefs, which recommended the removal of Alhaji Abuba Nasimong as chief of Bunkpurugu
The dispute revolves around competing claims to the Bunkpurugu skin and the traditional authority responsible for matters relating to the chieftaincy
The Nayiri maintains that Bunkpurugu falls within the chieftaincy jurisdiction of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, over which he exercises traditional authority
The transfer of the case to the High Court in Tamale sets the stage for further legal proceedings in the contempt application
The court is expected to determine the issues raised in the application in accordance with the law
