38-year-old Isaac Abondem is Upper East Regional Best Farmer

Isaac Abondem has been adjudged the Upper East Regional Best Farmer at the 2023 Regional Farmers’ Day celebration at Bolgatanga. Mr. Abodem was presented with a Motor King tricycle, a wheelbarrow, wellington boots, knapsack sprayer, some bags of fertilizers, and four machetes among other assorted items at the event held to celebrate the 39th National Farmers’ Day.

The farmer, who hails from the Wiaga community, is well known for the cultivation of tomatoes, groundnuts, watermelon, pepper, millet, beans, mango, okra and rearing of livestock. He has over 2 acres of teak plantation, 57 acres of maize, 21 acres of millet, 51 acres of rice among others within the year under review, as well as livestock including 167 cattle, 332 sheep and 126 guinea fowls among others.

Presenting his prize to him, the Upper East Regional Minister Mr. Stephen Yakubu said agriculture has been the engine of economic development in providing valuable source of employment for the youth of this country. He was not surprised that 38 year old Isaac was adjudged the 2023 regional best farmer. Farmers throughout the country were awarded in the regions for their immense contributions to the socio-economic development of the country but the Upper East Region postponed the event to 8th December citing financial challenges.

The event, on the theme: Delivering smart solutions for sustainable food security and resilience saw more than seventy farmers in the region recognized for their diverse contributions to national development. The Regional Director of Food and Agriculture Alhaji Fuseini Zakaria expressed that the Upper East Region is challenged with climate change.

The Regional Best Farmer Abondem Isaac through an interpreter cited lack of adequate rainfall and high prices of farm inputs including fertilizers hampering their farming activities. He encouraged the youth and the general public to invest in agriculture for a lifetime benefit.
