Upper East Delivers 370 Development Projects as Bawku Records Growing Peace – Regional Minister Accounts to the People

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga has announced that the region has made significant progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, roads, water, and local economic development, with 370 development projects currently being implemented across the region

Delivering his address at the Resetting Ghana citizens engagement town hall meeting  “Accounting to the People” led by President Mahama as part of his Resetting Ghana tour of the Upper East Region, at Desert Pastures in Bolgatanga on Friday August 14, 2026, the Minister said the projects comprise 253 physical development projects, 15 24-Hour Economy Markets, and 102 GETFund projects spread across the region’s 15 Municipal and District Assemblies.
Mr. Atanga described the President’s visit as a demonstration of government’s commitment to accountability and inclusive development, stressing that the tour offers an opportunity to account for progress, engage citizens, and strengthen the relationship between government and the people

On security, the Minister noted that although Bawku remains the region’s biggest security concern, the area has witnessed relative peace, with reconciliation and social integration gradually improving. He attributed the decline in armed robbery and motorbike snatching to the efforts of security agencies, traditional authorities, and the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team.

In the education sector, the Minister disclosed that 90 projects are underway, including classroom blocks, rehabilitation works, sanitation facilities, and other educational infrastructure aimed at improving teaching and learning across the region.
He also highlighted major investments in healthcare, revealing that 61 health infrastructure projects have been undertaken, while government is pursuing the upgrade of the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo, the establishment of a medical school at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), a modern referral hospital in Bawku, and a Regional Teaching Hospital in Bolgatanga.
On agriculture, Mr. Atanga said the region has distributed 12,233 mini-bags and 42,510 50kg bags of fertiliser to 7,569 farmers under the Feed Ghana Programme. Additionally, 9,500 birds have been supplied to 252 farmers under the Nkoko Nketenkete Initiative, with plans to extend the programme to the remaining districts.

He further revealed that about 24,475 acres of land with irrigation potential have been identified across several districts, while ongoing rehabilitation works on the Vea Right Bank Irrigation Scheme, together with improvements to the Tono and Tamne irrigation projects, are expected to boost year-round agricultural production

The Minister also announced progress in water and sanitation, including the expansion of the Bongo Water Supply System, which now serves over 25,000 residents, alongside rehabilitation works on the Sandema and Chiana water systems

On road infrastructure, he said 273.35 kilometres of feeder roads have been awarded, with 63.66 kilometres already completed. He added that under the Big Push Programme, the region is benefiting from 34 kilometres of road construction, while efforts continue to secure funding for the completion of the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom Road

Mr. Atanga also disclosed that government is pursuing the development of the Bolgatanga Regional Airport, a project expected to improve connectivity and stimulate investment in the region.
He reiterated the region’s commitment to youth development through sports, revealing that documentation for the proposed Bolgatanga Sports Stadium has been submitted to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for consideration

Highlighting the region’s economic potential, the Minister pointed to its rich deposits of gold, limestone, quarry resources, and solar energy, saying these resources present opportunities for industrialisation, investment, and job creation. He added that the rollout of 24-Hour Economy Markets across all 15 assemblies will further stimulate local economic growth

Concluding his address, Mr. Atanga assured President Mahama that the Regional Coordinating Council, district assemblies, traditional authorities, and development partners remain committed to delivering sustainable development. He also pledged to replicate the Accounting to the People initiative at the district level to strengthen public participation and accountability
