Lesken Enterprise Celebrates Upper East Journalists for Giving Communities a Voice

By – Gladys Apuweni

In communities where some concerns may otherwise go unheard, a journalist with a microphone, notebook or camera can become the link between ordinary people and those with the power to act.

It is this role that Lesken Enterprise Limited says deserves recognition, as the company has commended journalists in Ghana’s Upper East Region for their contribution to public information and community development.

For the company, journalism is not simply about reporting events.

It is about telling the stories of people whose voices may not always reach the corridors of power, drawing attention to problems that affect communities and helping citizens make sense of the issues around them.

Speaking on behalf of Lesken Enterprise Limited, the company’s Operations Manager, Bogobiri Bernard Salia, said the company was proud to celebrate journalists of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Upper East Branch, for their dedication to the profession.

Across the Upper East Region, journalists routinely travel into communities to report on issues ranging from education and healthcare to agriculture, sanitation, business, governance and social development.

Sometimes, their stories begin with a simple complaint from a resident.

A broken road.

A health facility without essential services.

A farmer struggling with production.

A child facing difficulties at school.

Or a community waiting for a promised development project.

By bringing such concerns into the public domain, journalists can help transform what might appear to be an individual problem into an issue requiring public attention.

Mr. Salia believes this responsibility makes credible journalism an important part of community development.

He commended journalists for producing accurate, responsible and impactful stories that keep the public informed and bring attention to issues that matter to ordinary people.

The commendation also comes at a time when journalists and media organisations in the region have been celebrating excellence within their profession.

Mr. Salia congratulated the GJA Upper East Regional executives for organising a successful awards ceremony and for creating a platform to recognise journalists whose work has made an impact.

For journalists, such recognition can mean more than a trophy.

It can provide encouragement to continue working in a profession that often demands long hours, difficult assignments and personal sacrifices.

Behind many radio reports, television stories and newspaper articles are journalists who leave their homes early, return late and sometimes work under challenging conditions simply to ensure that the public receives information.

But the recognition also comes with a responsibility.

Mr. Salia urged journalists not to lose sight of the values that underpin their profession—trust, integrity and professionalism.

The media industry is changing rapidly, with journalists facing pressure to publish quickly while navigating misinformation, social media commentary and growing public expectations.

In such an environment, credibility can become one of a journalist’s most valuable assets.

A story may take only a few minutes to read or listen to, but the consequences of getting it wrong can last much longer.

Lesken Enterprise therefore encouraged journalists to remain committed to credible and impactful reporting despite the difficulties confronting the media industry.

For Lesken Enterprise, the gesture is also about building a stronger relationship with the media fraternity.

Mr. Salia said the company remains committed to developing a strong and fruitful working relationship with the GJA Upper East Branch for the benefit of journalism and the wider community.

That relationship, he suggested, should be rooted in a shared interest in the development of the region.

Businesses need a credible media to communicate with the public. Communities need journalists to amplify their concerns. And journalists need responsible institutions willing to engage with the stories affecting society.

In that sense, the relationship between business, media and communities can become more than a professional connection.

It can become part of the broader development story of the Upper East Region.

As Lesken Enterprise celebrates journalists, its message is ultimately a reminder of why the profession continues to matter.

Every day, there are people with stories that need to be told and problems that need attention.

There are communities waiting to be heard, institutions that need scrutiny and individuals whose experiences can help others understand the realities of life in the region.

Mr. Salia urged journalists to remain committed to that responsibility.

For the men and women behind the microphones, cameras and notebooks, the work continues.

Because sometimes, giving someone a voice is the first step towards getting someone to listen.
