The awards ceremony, held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Lapam Zorkor Hotel in Bolgatanga, brought together journalists, media organisations, stakeholders and other dignitaries to celebrate excellence and contribution to journalism in the Upper East Region
The ceremony was held under the theme: “Beyond the Headlines: The Media’s Role in Promoting WASH for Safe Motherhood and Quality Healthcare.”
Late Raymond Wegwi honoured
The late Raymond Wegwi, a former Head of the GBC Kasem Department, was honoured posthumously for his contribution to broadcasting and journalism in the region
Mr. Wegwi was also a Morning Show host and hosted an agribusiness programme, using his broadcasting career to engage audiences on issues of public interest and development
He also served as the Upper East Regional Treasurer of the Ghana Journalists Association, contributing to the development of the journalism profession beyond his work as a broadcaster
The posthumous award was received as a tribute to his enduring contribution to journalism and broadcasting in the Upper East Region

Sophia-Stacey Ackumey receives honorary award
Veteran female journalist Sophia-Stacey Araba Ackumey was also honoured with an honorary award in recognition of her long-standing service and contribution to journalism in the Upper East Region.
Her recognition celebrates her years of service to the profession and her contribution to the growth of journalism, particularly as a female journalist in the region

GBC and GBC URA Radio shine
The recognition of the two distinguished journalists came on a night when Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and GBC URA Radio also recorded a strong showing at the awards
Gladys Apuweni of GBC URA Radio was adjudged Female Journalist of the Year, while Prosper Adaakai was recognised in the Tourism, Arts and Culture category.
GBC’s Peter Agengre also won awards in both the Environment and Education categories

The honours for the late Raymond Wegwi and Sophia-Stacey Ackumey further added a special dimension to the ceremony, celebrating both the legacy of a departed broadcaster and the enduring contribution of a veteran female journalist to the profession
