UER: Bolgatanga MCE Announces Plans for Municipal Hospital and New CHPS Compounds

By: Prosper Adankai

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bolgatanga, Mr. Roland Ayoo Atanga, has disclosed plans by the Municipal Assembly to construct a fully fledged municipal hospital to address the growing healthcare needs of residents in the area.

According to Mr. Ayoo Atanga, preparations toward the project are far advanced, with ongoing efforts to mobilise financial support for its commencement. He explained that the Assembly is in the process of liaising with the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga as well as a Board Member of the Bank of Ghana to secure the needed funding for the construction of the hospital.

Speaking on the Sunrise Morning Show on GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga, the MCE revealed that a suitable parcel of land has already been allotted and earmarked for the project, underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring the timely execution of the initiative. He described the proposed municipal hospital as a critical intervention that would significantly improve access to quality healthcare and reduce the burden on existing health facilities within the municipality.

Mr. Ayoo Atanga noted that Bolgatanga, as a fast-growing municipal capital in the Upper East Region, continues to experience increased pressure on its health infrastructure. He said the construction of a municipal hospital would not only expand healthcare delivery but also help decongest the Upper East Regional Hospital, which currently serves as the main referral facility for the municipality and surrounding districts.

In addition to the proposed hospital, the MCE announced plans to construct Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds at Sawaaba and Warabiisi in the Tangzui area of the municipality. He explained that the projects would be funded through the District Assembly Common Fund and are intended to bring primary healthcare services closer to residents in underserved communities.

According to him, the absence of nearby health facilities in some parts of the municipality has compelled residents to travel long distances to seek basic medical care, often resulting in delayed treatment and preventable complications. The proposed CHPS compounds, he said, would help address these challenges by ensuring timely access to essential health services, particularly for women, children, and the elderly.

Mr. Ayoo Atanga emphasized that improving healthcare delivery remains a top priority for the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama. He stated that the government is committed to strengthening health systems at the local level as part of its broader agenda to enhance the well-being of citizens and promote inclusive development.

He further assured residents that the Municipal Assembly would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including traditional authorities, development partners, and central government institutions, to ensure the successful implementation of health-related projects across the municipality.
