UE/R: Women in Broadcasting Donates 6,000 Exercise Books to Deprived Schools in Upper East Region.

The women in Broadcasting (WiB), Upper East Region, has donated 6,000 exercise books and textbooks to school children in deprived communities across five districts in the region. The donation, made yesterday, September 15, 2025, forms part of the group’s commitment to improving education for vulnerable children.
The initiative exceeded expectations, as the group had initially set a target of 3,000 books. “We are a happy group today because we doubled our target,” said Mrs. Humul Kusum Tahiru, President of Women in Broadcasting. “We observed that some children were using one exercise book for multiple subjects, which is not a healthy practice. As women in the media, we felt compelled to use our voices to mobilize support for these children.”

The distribution exercise covered Garigbane Primary School in the Talensi District, Zuarungu Moshie Primary School, Apuongo Tingirin Primary School, and Azalonge Primary School, before concluding at the Kasena Nankana Municipal Education Office. The group, however, could not reach Yua Primary School due to time constraints.
The donation was made possible through contributions from both individuals and corporate sponsors. Major supporters included the Happy Man Foundation, Global Poly, AquaBorg, and Nana K Home Touch Restaurant, alongside numerous individuals who provided textbooks, storybooks, and packs of exercise books. Each member of Women in Broadcasting also donated at least one pack of books, demonstrating their collective commitment.
“We are grateful to all our sponsors and to our members, who showed passion and sacrifice,” Mrs. Tahiru noted. “Together, if we each contribute in small ways, our society will be better for the children, women, and the aged.” She further extended an invitation to civil society groups and NGOs to partner with WiB on future initiatives, emphasizing that the group’s mission is about making impact, not claiming glory.
At the Kasena Nankana Municipal Education Office, the District Director of Education, Mr. Thomas Kanlisi received the items on behalf of the school. He commended Women in Broadcasting for their intervention. “This initiative is deeply appreciated, as many schools lack the necessary support. These books will go a long way in improving the quality of learning,” he said. Mr. Kanlisi also encouraged parents to provide basic educational materials for their wards and challenged men, particularly those in broadcasting, to emulate WiB’s example.

He assured the group that the donated materials would be distributed promptly. “Tomorrow morning, the head of the school will be here to collect the items, and I assure you that the children will put them to good use,” he added.
The group also expressed appreciation to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Upper East Region, for its continuous support.
Women in Broadcasting, an association of female media practitioners in the Upper East Region, is dedicated to empowering women and amplifying the voices of the vulnerable. This donation exercise forms part of its broader vision of promoting equal opportunity, advocacy, and community development.
