UE/R: TEWU to Embark on Nationwide Industrial Action Over Delayed Conditions of Service

By: Prosper Adankai

The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced plans to begin a nationwide industrial action on Friday, September 19, 2025, in protest against the prolonged delay in concluding its conditions of service.

The Union says the decision follows months of frustration in negotiations with key state agencies, particularly the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the National Labour Commission. According to TEWU, the stalled process has left members without clarity or fairness in their terms of employment, despite repeated engagements.

In an interview with GBC URA Radio in Bolgatanga, the Senior Regional Industrial Relations Officer of TEWU, Bro. Matthew Abeaba Abereniya, explained that members have been “pushed to the wall” and see no option but to withdraw their services if the matter is not addressed promptly.

The impending strike is expected to disrupt operations in several government institutions, including educational facilities where non-teaching staff such as administrators, cleaners, cooks, and security personnel provide critical support. These workers form the backbone of the day-to-day running of schools and public agencies, and their absence could have far-reaching consequences. The industrial action comes at a time when the education sector is already grappling with challenges ranging from inadequate infrastructure to ongoing debates about conditions of service for teaching staff. TEWU insists that the fair treatment of non-teaching personnel is essential for the smooth delivery of public services.

The Union has called on government and its agencies to act in good faith and expedite the signing of its conditions of service to avert what could become a nationwide disruption across schools and public offices.
