UE/R: GHANAIAN ADVOCATE WALKS OVER 700 KILOMETERS TO DEMAND SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN UPPER EAST REGION

BY: VALERIUS ATUIMAH

Dennis Apusika, a passionate tourism promoter and sports enthusiast from Bolga, has completed a bold and arduous journey on foot from Bolga to Accra—a distance exceeding 700 kilometers—to raise awareness and advocate for the construction of a sports stadium in the Upper East Region. His initiative seeks to galvanize support for youth sports development, unite diverse communities, and ignite local talent on the national and international stage.

Dennis, known for his tourism promotion under the handle “Visit Bolga,” was initially inspired by a football pledge he made on social media after his favorite team, Chelsea, lost a critical match. Despite uncertainty and disbelief from friends and family, he committed wholeheartedly to walking from his hometown to the capital starting July 22, 2025.

Through villages and towns spanning Bolga, Walewale, Tamale, Yendi, and finally Accra, Dennis endured financial challenges, health risks, and logistical setbacks. Yet, he was met with overwhelming support from local communities, police officers, and even strangers who became his “security” and morale boosters along the way.

Speaking to Hannah Barribilla on the GBC URA marketplace on August 25, 2025, Dennis emphasized the urgent need for a sports stadium to foster talent development and serve as a hub for regional festivals and cultural unity. “A stadium is not just a sports venue; it is a symbol of unity, a place where young talent can blossom and dreams can be realized,” he said.

Dennis’ arrival in Accra marks a critical step forward as he plans to petition stakeholders and government bodies to realize this vision. His remarkable journey highlights the intersection of sports, tourism, and community advocacy, setting an inspiring example for perseverance and civic engagement.

As Ghana continues to celebrate homegrown initiatives that seek to uplift and unite, Dennis Apusika’s walk stands as a testament to the spirit of dedication and the importance of investing in the sports infrastructure that can shape the future of many young Ghanaians.
