UE/R: SOCO PROJECT FACILITATORS URGED TO WORK HARD FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT – DCE NABDAM
By: Gideon K. Adu
The PSWU demonstrated its dedication to releasing Africa from the bonds of illicit debt by participating in a symbolic chain-breaking event alongside thousands of workers, activists, and civil society organizations.

The General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), a significant affiliate of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, expressed strong support for the continental appeal to erase Africa’s external debts during the Pan-African Rally for Debt Cancellation, which took place in Accra on August 29, 2025.
While the rally was led by ITUC-Africa and Ghana TUC, the PSWU played a vital role in mobilizing public sector workers and amplifying the message that debt cancellation is not just an economic necessity, but a matter of social justice and democratic survival.

Key Messages from PSWU Leadership
Bro. Benard Adjei, the PSWU’s General Secretary, emphasized that the national finances are being largely devoted to debt repayment, leaving little for social security, healthcare, education, and sanitation.
Workers bear the brunt as Austerity measures linked to debt repayment have a direct impact on declining working conditions, job instability, and wage stagnation.
Reparative justice is overdue:
The PSWU echoed the rally’s theme that Africa’s debts are rooted in exploitative systems, and cancellation must be seen as a form of reparations for centuries of colonial extraction and unjust financial arrangements.
The PSWU called on all public sector unions across Africa to unite in demanding a new financial architecture that prioritizes people over profit, the Unions must lead the charge.
