Professor John Allembillah, president of the Kausag Peoples’ Congress (KPC), has pleaded with the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party flagbearers to help resolve the long-running issue.

During a Kussaug Peoples’ Congress march in Garu, the Executive Director of The Sanneh Institute at Legon made a plea against recent military brutality. Prof. Azumah has urged presidential hopefuls John Drahamani Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to address the Bawku feud before the 2024 elections. He stressed the need of restoring peace in Kusaug and advised the candidates to concentrate settling regional issues. The demonstration sought justice for over 200 people brutalized by the military on October 25, 2023, and was attended by a diverse group of people, including the Member of Parliament for Garu, Dr. Thomas Anaba, the 2024 National Democratic Congress’ Parliamentary candidate for Garu, former district chief executives, assembly members, and various youth groups.

Prof. John Azumah, President of the KPC, MP Albert Alalzuga Akuka and others

The major streets of Garu were lined with signs that read, “See something, run away,” “Kasaug needs freedom,” “Garu will rise again stronger,” “Ghana Brutality Service” and “The army should go back to the barracks.”

Mr. Albert Alanzuga Akuka, Member of Parliament for Garu, voiced his disgust at the military brutality that resulted in the murder of a young man. On Thursday, November 9, 2023, he and his colleagues stated that they would address the problems of the people of Garu and Tempane in parliament. The minister in charge of national security is due to appear in parliament to answer questions regarding what happened in Garu and Bugri.
