Thirty five (35) former Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region led by Alhaji Issah Sanusi, former regional director of communication, have formally declared their unflinching support for Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s preferred flagbearer for the 2028 General Elections.

At a press conference held at the NPP Regional Party Office in Bolgatanga on Friday January 23 2026. The former executives announced their collective decision following what they described as careful scrutiny of all five aspirants and deep reflection on the future of the party.

1. Speaking on behalf of the group, the leadership emphasized that their endorsement is driven by the urgent need to rebuild the party, unite its base, and recapture political power from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“After extensive consultation and objective assessment, we are convinced that Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the best possible choice for the NPP in 2028,” the statement read.

Why Bawumia?

The former executives outlined four main reasons for their support:

1. Leadership and Electability
They described Dr. Bawumia as a candidate with the caliber, experience, and national appeal required to lead the NPP back to victory in a highly competitive political environment.

2. Experience and Political Consistency
Having led the party into the 2024 elections and served as Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Bawumia brings invaluable experience. The group noted that the party’s tradition of giving its leaders a second opportunity has often proven to be a winning strategy.

3. Competence and Character
According to the executives, Dr. Bawumia has consistently demonstrated competence, humility, dedication, and resourcefulness qualities essential for rebuilding the party and steering Ghana toward sustainable progress.

4. Vision for Ghana
They highlighted his inclusive and people centered vision, which focuses on human development, innovation, and sustainable socio economic transformation. His ideas, they said, resonate with the aspirations of Ghanaians across all age groups.
Call to Party Delegates

The group concluded by urging all delegates of the New Patriotic Party to rally behind Dr. Bawumia during the party’s upcoming presidential primary scheduled for January 31,2026.

“We therefore call on all delegates of the New Patriotic Party to support Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the NPP into the 2028 General Elections and secure victory for our great party.”

The vice president and the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general election, Dr Mahamud Bawumia and his campaign team has ended their campaign tour of Upper East Region with a visit to Binduri, Zebila and Bolgatanga central constituencies in the last day of the tour. At Binduri, Dr Mahamud Bawumia said former president John Dramani Mahama brought Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, SADA, to help the people of the north but ended up with no a single project to show but NPP secured a loan of €139.4 million for the construction of Bolgatanga -Bawku-Pulmakum road which is 70% complete and the contractor will soon be back to finish it and the agenda 111 hospital too is near completion in Binduri.

According to him the people of Binduri have benefited from the NPP government and appeal to them to continue to vote for them. On the Bawku conflict, he appealed to the people to live in peace adding that Kusasis and Manprusis are one and must unite and rather fight for development. In Zebila constituency he told the chiefs and the enthusiastic crowd that NPP government ‘s developmental projects are unparalleled, some of which are the free SHS/TVET, agenda 111, one 1D1F, PFJ, one constituency one Ambulance and appeals to the people to vote for him to continue with the good works. Dr Mahamud Bawumia said when given the nod he’s going to establish district mechanization centres for modern agricultural drive,train one million youth on digitalization which will enable them to work in any part of the world whilst living in Ghana, pay living allowances to all chiefs by changing section 63 of the chieftancy act and many more.

Bolgatanga central was the center of attraction as the NPP’s supporters filled the jubilee Park waiting in the night for the arrival of their Flagbearer Dr Mahamud Bawumia. At that venue the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga central Hon. Elvis Figo Awonekai gave a strong indication that per the development projects going on in the constituency like roads, provision of water, health, education, farmers support etc ,the sitting MP, Hon.  Isaac Adongo has no chance in this year’s elections and appealed to the people of Bolgatanga central to just give him 4 years and the would not regret. Dr Amin A. Anta who is the finance minister used the occasion to praise NPP’s government for managing the economy better , citing a budget deficit of 6.3 percent of the NDC’s government in 2016 as against 3.3 percent of NPP’s government in 2023 and therefore asked the people to change their voting patterns this time and vote for Dr Mahamud Bawumia.

When the presidential candidate took the stage,he didn’t minced words, he said “we performed better than the NDC’s government” and if they are refuting that, they should accept his debating challenge to settle it. He called the people of Upper East Region to change the way the have been voting this time because both of them are from the north and former president John Dramani Mahama had the opportunity to govern and this time he has only 4 years and he Dr Mahamud Bawumia have 8 years to also govern , which is enough to do a good job for the people of Ghana. He reiterated his promised to construct Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam adding that Bolgatanga airport too will be delivered and many more. He was accompanied by the stalwarts of NPP from the national, regional and the constituencies level for their successful tour and all the places visited the chiefs and the people lauded him for the developmental projects given to them so far and ask for more when given the nod in their goodwill messages to him.

The vice president and the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections Dr Mahamud Bawumia has declared pwalugu Multi Purpose dam construction as his number one signature project to help in his modern agricultural drive in the north if he is given the nod.

According to him that will include openning up of the area by construction of many access roads and acilairy facilities.

Another promise was to make electricity penetration hundred percent coverage through out the country with solar energy a huge part of it to help businesses.

Apart from those things some of his campaign policies sold to the people of Talensi and Ghana as a whole are provision of best telephony network, creating jobs for the youth especially small scale mining, establishment of Mineral Development Bank payment of living allowances to chiefs and building of special training college for Talensi adding that all these policies are captured in his manifesto which would be launch next month.

He made all these known at a durbar of chiefs and people of Talensi traditional area at the tongoraana’s palace when he and his entourage paid a courtesy call on them in their Upper East Regional campaign to the constituency, on his Upper East Regional campaign tour .
Alhajj Dr Mahamud Bawumia said the NPP’s government has performed very well in all the sectors especially education and the digitalization and appeals to the people to vote massively for him comes December 7 to continue with the good works as he is having 8 years opportunity to do that than John Dramani of the National Democratic Congress of 4 years.

The paramount chief of Talensi traditional area, Tongoraana Kugbilso Nanlebegteng was very grateful for his visit and only asked him to fulfill his promises when given the nod to improve the lives of his people.

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says LGBTQ acts will not be tolerated under his Presidency.

Dr Bawumia was speaking at the Holy Ghost Temple of the Assemblies of God church in Bolgatanga.

He gave the assurance that LGBTQ+ will not happen in Ghana under his watch, and emphasized that “LGBTQ will not be allowed in Ghana.”

On contributions of the Church to the development of Ghana, the NPP’s Flagbearer, said the Church was a development partner and had contributed significantly in education, health among other infrastructural projects.

Dr Bawumia said his Presidency would ensure duty-free for some of their imports to enable them continue to contribute more to the development of Ghana.

He appealed to the congregation to vote for him to continue his digitalization agenda as digitalization had come to stay, and Ghana could not be left out of the digital world.

He highlighted the usefulness of the Ghana Card for travelling, adding that with the introduction of the digital system, 44,000 ghost names were deleted from payrolls of various government agencies.

Dr Bawumia further promised to start a credit scoring system in Ghana through the digitalization agenda to afford Ghanaians the ability to afford products on high purchase.

The vice president who doubles as the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party was addressing members of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in Bolgatanga as part of his day’s campaign tour of the region.

He stated that under his presidency Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs as well as Queen Mothers would be paid what is called Living Wages.

He said the health of the masses were so dear to government that was why the Agenda lll Complete Hospital project was started to bring healthcare delivery to the door steps of the people adding that seven of these projects were being put up in the Upper East Region some of which were at various stages of completion. He pledged to upgrade the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital to befit its status as a regional hospital.

Dr. Bawumia promised to establish District Mining Committees for which chiefs would play an active role in the issuance of mining licenses to small scale miners in all the mining districts of this country. To better place the small scale miners to expand their operations the vice president pledged to establish Mineral Development Bank to make access to credit very easy for small scale miners.

Dr. Bawumia on Friday, May 17, 2024, joined his fellow Muslims at the Bolgatanga Central mosque for Jummah prayers as part of his campaign tour of the Upper East Region, Dr.Bawumia requested for special prayers to be offered to the Almighty Allah for him to become Victorious in the 2024 election

The donation was received by the Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Yussif Umar Imam who expressed gratitude to the Flagbearer for his selfless service to the cause of Allah and humanity.

Prayers were also said for the leadership of the country for God’s guidance and protection, as well as for the sustenance of the peaceful co-existence among citizens.

Interacting with members of the muslim clergy of the Upper East Region in Bolgatanga as part of a day’s campaign visit to the region. They were made up of the Tijjania Muslim sect, Ahlusunna sect, the Shia among others stating that 40 briliant but needy Zongo students were being sponsored by the fund who were studying medicine abroad. According to him they would be done with their courses hopefully by next year most of who would come back to serve in the Zongo communities.

The flagbearer of the ruling NPP assured the clergy that given the nod as the president of the Republic of Ghana after the general elections he would ensure the continuity of the medical training of the Zongo youth so as to enhance the human resource needs of our Zongo communities.

He further made clear his stand on the LGBTQ issue saying it would not be entertained under his watch as President stressing that the act was against our religious and cultural values which were so dear to us as a society.

The Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Yussif Umar Imam who spoke on behalf of the Moslem clergy commended the vice president for his foresight for the Zongo communities saying projects funded by the fund were all over the Zongo communities for us to see. He presented a citation on behalf of the Imams and members of the Association of Zongo Chiefs.

The Vice President who was interacting with the Christian clergy of the Upper East Region in Bolgatanga as part of his day’s campaign activities of the region also lauded the contribution of the Church towards the development of different sectors of the country re-echoeing his commitment to built a stronger collaboration with the Church to enhance its efforts in this direction.

Dr Bawumia stated that he went into politics to affect lives positively and this had been his guiding principle as seen in most of the pro-poor policies being churned out by the government of the New Patriotic Party citing access to university education by the physically challenged persons yet to come to fruition.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned the Nalerigu, ‘Naa Sheriga’, ultra-modern sports complex in the North East Region

The facility, constructed by Wembley Sports Constructions Company, was personally built for the youth of Nalerigu and its environs by Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer Of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The sports complex, which is named after the late Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Sheriga, has auxiliary facilities such as, a standard astro turf, a VIP stand, changing rooms, stands with a seating capacity of 1000 people, offices, as well as expanded standing areas for future expansion.

Speaking after commissioning the park,  Vice President Bawumia said, ‘The Naa Sheriga Sports Complex will not only enhance sports development in the community, it will also be used as a recreational centre, as it can host many social events’.

Dignitaries present at the brief ceremony were; football legends, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, Laryea Kingston, Emmanuel Armah ‘Senegal’, Minister of Youth and sports Mustapha Ussif, NPP National chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim, NPP Parliamentary candidate for election 2024 in the Nalerigu /Gambaga constituency Nurudeen Muhammad Mumuni.

According to him, he has the track record to lead the party as well as defeat former President John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, he has beaten the former president twice and knows how to beat him in the 2024 elections to ensure the party is able to “break the 8.”
The Vice President thus urged the delegates to vote for him massively in the November 4, primaries.

Addressing party delegates and supporters at Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga during his final National Rally, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that he would beat John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general elections with experience should delegates vote for him to lead the party.

“I will beat John Mahama in 2024 because I know him and we have beaten him twice, so it won’t be a problem beating him in 2024,” he pointed out.

Dr. Bawumia stated that his track record as Vice President is unmatched.

“Everybody can agree that from Nkrumah till date, no Vice President has a track record than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. I introduced Ghana Card, No Guarantor Student Loan, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, One Constituency One Ambulance, Agenda 111, Zipline Drones among other policies,” he stressed.

The Vice President told delegates that should they elect him as the presidential candidate for the NPP, he will introduce more policies to transform the country.

On November 4, 2023, about 200,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party will cast their vote to elect a presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
